So, I noticed a lot of people have a hard time writing Japan (the personification not the country). I think Japan is one of the hardest characters to write perfectly. So because of that, here’s a list of tips on how to write Japan.

Stick To The Facts:

•For example, you can’t just say Japan is taller than America. It’s obviously wrong because Japan is on the shorter side and America is on the taller side. Trust me, people can get annoyed when someone screws up the little things.

Some Canon Facts About Japan:

•Human Name- Kiku Honda

•Birthday- February 11th, year not revealed

•Height: 5 foot 5

•Pet- A white dog named Pochi. Pochi looks like a Shiba Inu or an Akita, both Japanese dog breeds. Japan loves cats to though.

•Japan loves food in general, but his favorite food is food from his country.

•The one thing Japan hates the most is cockroaches (even to the point of crying over them)

•Japan is normally calm, and when he does get actually angry (very rarely) it’s described that his anger would be the “scariest”. It’s hard for him to get angry though, as he is mostly only able to have an “unpleasant feeling”.

•Japan has been hinted at being an otaku, but it has NEVER said anywhere in canon he’s a yaoi fanboy.

Most Annoying Portrayals of Japan (Don’t do these kiddies):

•Japan’s “yaoi obsession”- Like I said above ^ he might be an otaku but he’s not obsessed with yaoi. People say he’s a “ninja” and can sneak around. I’ve seen things where people depict him as taking pictures of it, trying to make everyone gay, and teaming up with Hungary to make a yaoi club.
I mean, I can get it if one of them say “Oh blank and blank are cute together” instead of “WHOA DID YOU SEE THAT POLAND AND LTHUANIA LOOKED AT EACH OTHER IT’S TRUE LOVE.”

•Writing Japan with his accent- I don’t think people realize how annoying “Hai. The ramb I saw was white.” No one wants to read an accent it just makes everything more annoying.

•Having Japan teach other’s Japanese or calling everyone by their Japanese names- No one wants to read- “I taught Itary how to speak Japanese. I aporergize if he calls Doitsu Germany-san.” I’m pretty sure none of us are Japanese so reading that mess just takes away from everything.

•Having Japan an emotionless robot- JAPAN CAN FEEL. ENOUGH SAID.

Get His Personality Right:

• I hate when people just screw that up. Especially if Kiku’s the main character. Japan is shy, quiet and hardworking and he needs time to get used to people. He doesn’t know much about the outside world. That doesn’t mean Japan is a loner. Also, he’s uncomfortable with nudity, but he has erotic woodcuts which he tries to hide from the world behind his non-erotic books. That doesn’t mean he’s a porn addict. Don’t depict Japan as an cranky old man, even if he is old.

For those to lazy to read, here’s a recap:

• Japan is quiet but not an emotionless drone

•He may be an otaku, but it’s not an obsession. Neither is yaoi.

•Don’t make Japan speak with the accent and don’t have him refer to others as “Senpai” or “San”

• It’s very hard to get Japan angry, he just feels an unpleasant feeling.

• Japan feels like an old man, as he’s been around longer than the other nations. Don’t make him act like an old man though.

•Have fun writing Japan, just keep the canon in check
